Adjectives and adverbs

Business is going from bad to worse. (deteriorate further)

They always do things in a big way. (on a large scale)

The government has taken a very hard line (not giving in) against illegal quarrying.

Orders for the new product are coming in thick and fast. (in large numbers)


Nouns

How can any one make ends meet (manage with the money) with just Rs.2000/- a month?

Your son’s behaviour is a matter of concern. (something to worry about)

The name sounds familiar but I can’t call her face to mind. (recall something from memory; recognise)



Nouns and adjectives

My uncle loves to tell us how to play cricket. He is an armchair expert.
(one who gives advice in an area in which he was not actively involved)

Ravi is our sincere employee. He has had a clean slate (a past record without discredit) for over twenty years.



Idioms and Prepositions 

The policeman went near the damaged car to have a look at close quarters. (very near)

r. Jacob is at the helm (in charge) of affairs in this hospital.



Verbal Idioms

No one can make a break even (make no profit or loss) in the first year of business.

Because of the steep rice in prices, people living on pension feel the pinch. (feeling unpleasant change in one’s standard of living)



Idiomatic Pairs

Let us settle the bill for the damage fair and square. (in a fair way)

I can hear you over phone loud and clear. (very clearly)

By and by (as time goes by) he will realise that my going to Delhi was the right decision.

Where to use use an and the "articles"

Usage of ‘an’: Fill in your own examples!

-          In front of singular noun that starts with the Vowel sound (the sounds of a, e, I, o, u; not the letter): an ant, an egg, an umbrella, an ink pot, an orange  ______
-          Before a mute ‘h’: an honest man, an hour __________
-          Before individual letters spoken with a vowel sound (f, h, I, m, n, r, s, x):

An FIR, an HMT watch, an LIC agent, an MBA, an MP an MLA, an NOC, an STD call, an SMS, an X-ray room _________

The definite article ‘the’ is used before.
1.       A particular noun – You met the man.

LET US REVISE ARTICLES – LET US LEARN:

-          I bought a house.
-          The house I bought is in Chennai.
The highlighted words in the above sentences ‘a’  ‘an’ and ‘the ‘are called articles.
They indicate the coming of a noun ‘house’.
-          The indefinite article ‘a’ or ‘an’ means one and is used only with singular conundtable nouns.
-          The definite article ‘the ‘refers to a particular person or thing and can be used with both singular and plural nouns and also with uncountable nouns.

LET US LEARN- USAGE OF ‘A’:
Fill in your own examples!

-          Before a  word beginning with a consonant

‘A kettle’, ‘a woman’, ‘a fan’, ‘a chair’

-          Before a word beginning with a vowel with a consonant sound
‘A university,’ ‘a European’, ‘a one – eyed man’

-          before a singular countable noun when it is mentioned for the first time
He bought a book.

-          With an expression of quantity
A lot of time, a dozen oranges, a great deal of money
-          With certain numbers
A hundred rupee note, a thousand times

-          Before half and when half follows a whole number
Half a liter, two and a half kilos

-          Such a mess! What a lovely flower.
-          Before a stressed ‘h’
